What is going on
Codex remembers who you are after the first sign-in. That is convenient until you switch accounts or plans, your session ends, or a sign-in attempt fails halfway and leaves things in a confusing state. Codex then asks you to sign in again, keeps using the wrong account, or fails every time.
Error messages you might see
Common causes
- You signed in with a personal account and need a work one, or the other way round.
- Your session ended or your plan or workspace changed.
- An earlier sign-in attempt failed halfway and left damaged data behind.
- Several Codex apps on one computer (terminal, editor extension, desktop app) are not sharing the same state.
How to fix it
- Run
codex logoutto sign out. - Run
codex loginand sign in with the account you want. - Run
codex login statusto check which account Codex is using. - Quit and reopen the editor or desktop app so it picks up the new sign-in.
- Last resort: Codex keeps its settings and saved sign-in in a
.codexfolder in your home folder. Rename the folder instead of deleting it, so you can put your settings back, and sign in again.
If signing in fails with a network error, see the guide on the token_exchange_failed error.

Will signing out delete my projects?
No. Your code is in your own folders and repositories. Signing out only removes the saved sign-in.
How do I see which account Codex is using?
Run codex login status in a terminal.
