Claude Code: API Error: Connection lost mid-response

Claude Code stops with API Error: Connection lost mid-response. What it means, how to check what already ran, and what to try.

What is going on

Claude Code stops in the middle of a task and prints API Error: Connection lost mid-response. The response above may be incomplete. Older versions said "Connection closed mid-response" instead.

The message means the connection ended before the reply was finished. Part of what you see may be missing, and a step it was about to take may have run only halfway.

Error messages you might see

API Error: Connection closed mid-response

Common causes

  1. The internet connection dropped for a moment, for example on Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot.
  2. A VPN, proxy or company gateway ended the connection before the reply was complete.
  3. A very long reply or a long task, where one interruption loses the rest.
  4. A temporary problem on the service side, which many people see at the same time.

How to fix it

These steps are suggestions from users and from the error message itself.

  1. Check what already happened before you go on. Run git status and git diff to see whether a file was changed halfway.
  2. Tell Claude Code to continue, and ask it to first list what it has already done.
  3. Try a different network, or turn off the VPN or proxy for a moment.
  4. Update Claude Code to the latest version and start a new session if the error keeps coming back at once.
  5. Split the task into smaller steps. A short task has less to lose when a connection drops.
  6. If many people report the same thing at the same time, check the service status page and wait.

Jacek Rozanski Jacek Rozanski react · nextjs · supabase · typescript · tailwind · php · symfony · postgresql · mysql · docker · aws · node.js · stripe · api integrations · ci/cd · devops Senior PHP/Symfony developer and DevOps engineer with 20+ years of professional experience, running opcode.pl (web development agency, est. 2004). Day job: I'm the sole backend developer at merketing company where I own and maintain 11 PHP/Symfony microservices on AWS (ECS Fargate, RDS, S3, CloudFront), handle the full CI/CD pipeline (Bitbucket Pipelines, Docker), and manage monitoring with Sentry and CloudWatch. These services handle high request volumes in production every month. What I bring to AI-built apps: - I audit and fix security issues (OWASP methodology), performance bottlenecks, and architectural problems in codebases generated by Cursor, Claude Code, Lovable, Bolt, and v0 - I refactor AI-generated prototypes into production-grade applications with proper error handling, testing, and clean architecture (SOLID, DDD, hexagonal architecture) - I set up the infrastructure AI tools don't touch: AWS hosting, CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, database optimization, monitoring, and alerting - I integrate external services: payment providers, email systems, partner APIs, SSO/auth Tech stack: PHP 8.x, Symfony, React, Next.js, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Docker, AWS (ECS, RDS, S3, SQS/SNS, CloudFront), Terraform, Supabase. I also use AI tools daily (Claude Code, Cursor) in my own workflow, so I understand both the strengths and the gaps in AI-generated code. Based in Poland (CET timezone). Available for async work and calls during EU/US business hours. Alvin Voo Alvin Voo react · vue · nuxt.js · next.js · nest.js · node.js · postgresql · mysql · typescript · javascript · python · php I’ve watched the tech landscape evolve over the last decade—from the structured days of Java Server Pages to the current "wild west" of Agentic-driven development. While AI can "vibe" a frontend into existence, I specialize in the architecture that keeps it from collapsing. My expertise lies in the critical backend infrastructure: the parts that must be fast, secure, and scalable. I thrive on high-pressure environments, such as when I had only three weeks to architect and launch an Ethereum redemption system with minimal prior crypto knowledge, turning it into a major revenue stream. What I bring to your project: Forensic Debugging: I don't just "patch" bugs; I use tools like Datadog and Explain Analyzers to map out bottlenecks and resolve root causes—like significantly reducing memory usage by optimizing complex DB joins. Full-Stack Context: Deep experience in Node.js and React, ensuring backends play perfectly with mobile and web teams. Sanity in the Age of AI: I bridge the gap between "best practices" and modern speed, ensuring your project isn't just built fast, but built to last. Questions

Was my work lost?

Not usually. Files Claude Code already wrote stay on disk. Check git status and git diff to see exactly what changed.

Is it safe to just say continue?

Check what ran first. If a file was changed halfway, ask Claude Code to look at it before it goes on.
