What is going on
You installed Claude Code and typed claude, and the terminal says command not found: claude.
The install is usually fine. The terminal just cannot see the program.

Common causes
- The folder that holds the program is not on your PATH (for the standard installer this is usually
~/.local/bin). - You installed with npm and npm's global
binfolder is not on your PATH. - The terminal was open before the install and has not picked up the change.
- Two copies are installed (for example through the installer, Homebrew and npm) and they conflict.
How to fix it
These steps come from public troubleshooting guides. Check the official setup page for the install command that matches your system.
- Open a new terminal window and try
claude --versionagain. - See where it is:
command -v claude, andwhich -a claudeto list every copy. - If it was installed with the standard installer, add
~/.local/binto your PATH in your shell profile, then open a new terminal. - If it was installed with npm, find npm's global folder with
npm prefix -gand add itsbinfolder to PATH. - If you have more than one copy, keep one and remove the others.
- Run
claude doctorto check the install.
