Claude Code Changed My Code and the App Stopped Working

After a Claude Code session your app errors, shows a blank page or will not build. How to see what changed and get back to a working version.

What is going on

You asked Claude Code for one change. It edited several files, and now the app shows an error, a blank page, or will not build. You cannot tell which edit caused it.

Error messages you might see

Cannot find module
Unexpected token
Build failed
TypeError: undefined is not a function

Common causes

  1. The request was broad, so related files were changed as well.
  2. A package was added or updated, which changed other packages with it.
  3. An error was silenced instead of fixed, by removing a check or a setting.
  4. A setting or key exists on your computer but was never added where the app runs.

How to fix it

  1. See what changed with git status and git diff.
  2. Save the current state first, on a new branch if you can, so nothing is lost.
  3. Undo the part that broke it: git restore path/to/file for one file, or use /rewind for edits made by Claude Code.
  4. Read the first error in the log, not the last. The later ones are often caused by the first.
  5. Ask for the change again in small steps, and run the app after each one.
  6. Ask Claude Code to explain a change before accepting it. A part you cannot follow is the part to show a developer.

Questions

Can I get back to the working version?

Yes, if the project is in git. Commit your current state, then restore the files that broke, or revert the commit.

How do I avoid this next time?

Commit before each task and ask for one small change at a time.
